State Property Control Commission - Western & Atlantic Railroad - Lease Maps, Nashville, Chattanooga

 Series
Identifier: 085-01-005

Scope and Contents

This series consists of bound and unbound original blueprints, measuring approximately 22" X 46" in dimension, along with photocopies and negatives, of the official lease maps and supplemental maps of the Western & Atlantic Railroad right-of-way and side track facilities as operated by the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway. The original blueprints, with certain portions in color for notation, show the entire span of the Western & Atlantic Railroad property beginning at Mile Post Zero in Atlanta to the Chattanooga Terminal in Tennessee. Most of the maps were created in 1916 and certified by the Secretary of State in 1966 and 1967. Later maps were amended in 1986. The scale of the maps is 1" = 200'. The supplemental maps were authorized by H.R. 630 i n 1972. Because of an error of omission in the original maps, H.R. 630 authorized the supplemental maps to become an official part of the original maps. The original blueprints are folded twice and bound within two 22"X24" post binders with the photo negatives stuck loosely inside. Copies of the original blueprints are hound and rolled up and duplicate the original except for the different colored portions. These copies are comprised of three sets bound in nine separate sections. The original blueprints are arranged geographically by county where the property is located and thereunder numerically by map number per volume. The copies are arranged numerically by section number and thereunder numerically by map number. The unbound maps consist of four right-of-way plats, measuring 3.5'X6' in dimension, covering Catoosa, Cobb, Fulton and Whitfield Counties. These were drawn in the Office of the Chief Engineer of the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway.

The 2019 addition to this series includes 80 pages (plus cover sheet) of Western and Atlantic Railroad Lease Boundary valuation maps created in July and August 2018. They are approximately 24” X 56.” The scale varies from map to map. Like earlier maps in this series, they follow the course of the W&A from Atlanta to Chattanooga. They are arranged with sheet one beginning at Mile Post Zero. They were prepared by CSX Transportation. CSX’s lease to operate the W&A was set to expire on December 31, 2019, but the company signed a new lease with the State Properties Commission in September 2018 to operate the line for an additional 50 years. Maps are based on earlier versions drawn at various dates from 1916 to 1992. Maps show valuation mile posts, approximate lease boundaries, easements, and some list land transactions.
