Scope and Contents
This series consists primarily of correspondence with county historians concerning the preparation of county histories, but also includes copies of historical materials such as rosters of county officials, newspaper clippings, extracts from state records, etc. which relate to specific counties. Also included are the State Historian's general correspondence regarding the project as a whole and her general information folder containing state level compilations of data regarding individual counties including such items as lists of manuscripts of county histories on file with the Department of Archives and History, the name of each county's designated historian, lists of published county histories, the origins of county names, etc. The series relates to a movement to prepare county histories for the celebration of Georgia's bicentennial in 1933, but the correspondence covers quite a span of years before and after that year. the letters received include copies of the replies attached. This series documents in a most interesting and personal manner the State Historian's role in collecting and disseminating data relating to the histories of Georgia's counties and in the area of guiding and counseling those responsible for compiling these histories.
