Georgia Archives - Administration - Director's Subject Files
Scope and Contents
These are the subject files of the Director of the Georgia Department of Archives and History. The files reflect the operation of the Director's Office including but not limited to the following subjects: the planning and direction of the Department; relating with other professional archivists and organizations including the Society of American Archivists; diplomatic relations with fraternal and patriotic societies such as the United Daughters of the Confederacy; construction of the new Archives and Records Building, its equipping, and full staffing; the annual Archives Institute; the evolutionary development of records management as a state-wide responsibility of the Department; and the evolutionary development of grant funding and special projects. The records consist primarily of copies of outgoing correspondence and frequently the attached incoming letter. The files also include memoranda to and from the staff, departmental publications including an incomplete set of the Department's internal newsletter, and professional literature. The files do not include any gift accession files although the acquisition of gifts is discussed. The files include very few instructions from the Secretary of State to whom the Director reports nor do the files fully reflect the budgetary or personnel activities of the Director. Of particular interest are files making statistical reports and files regarding archival security. The files of the Director reflect the evolutionary growth of an institution, its professionalism, its leadership and staff, and its widening service network among many publics.
