This series contains a wide assortment of publications produced by the inmates of a number of penal institutions and rehabilitation centers in Georgia. The format of these publications varies from that of a newsletter of approximately ten pages in length to that of an inspirational tract of about four pages. For example, the GSP News, published monthly by the inmates of the Georgia State Prison at Reidsville, is much like any newsletter produced by one of the many state agencies in Georgia. Editorials, interviews with inmates, articles on personal philosophy, legal matters, library hours, industrial shows, training offerings, Georgia correctional history, staff changes and even comics, poetry and puzzles may be found within its pages. The tone of this publication is one of a large degree of professionalism. In contrast, at the other end of the publication spectrum are some of the rather short lived publications of the smaller penal institutions. These products very much resemble those of elementary school students, containing as they do much semi literate poetry and ungrammatical prose and inspirational messages. Often hand drawn illustrations are included particularly on the covers. In these instances, the term newsletter does not apply. There is no way to ascertain whether a complete set of these publications exists anywhere due, at least in part, to the mercurial nature of the staffs which produced them. It may be supposed that all institutions produced some sort of publication at some time, but not all were received or collected by the Public Information Office in Atlanta.
