John Word West papers
Scope and Contents
The majority of papers are carbons of letters written by Colonel West, as he was called, and photographs collected by him during his varied career. Other correspondence; genealogical compilations; estate, legal, and business records; account books; news clippings; compositions; and artifacts compose the rest of the collection. Organized into six series: I. J.W. West Personal Papers, II. J.W. West Family Papers, III. J.W. West Business Papers, IV. J.W. West Teaching Career Records, IV. "The Fair of 1850" and "Westville, GA" Records, and VI. Photographs.

Biographical / Historical
President of North Georgia Agriculture College (1925-1933) and devoted teacher at Georgia Military Academy for 32 years, West came from a small farming community near Fairburn to a late college degree, taught at several institutions, and topped off his career by creating the Fair of 1850 at his home in Jonesboro, Clayton County, Georgia (the museum progenitor of Westville) and a foundation to help needy students.
