Scope and Contents
Motion dockets document cases which are decided by the judge without intervention of a jury. This series consists of a single bound volume containing such cases and presents information which includes: (1) names of attorneys; (2) case number; (3) names of litigants; (4) types of charges complained of; (5) date and term of court, and (6) disposition of case. Some of the charges in these complaints include: (1) motions for a new trial; (2) certioraris (a writ to bring up a case from a lower court for review); (3) remittiturs (the remanding of a record from a higher court for further proceedings in the lower court); (4) applications from businesses for a charter; (5) judgments nisi (judgments to become final at next term of court unless the offended party presents new evidence); (6) mortgage foreclosures and petitions for rule nisi (a show cause order as to why it should not become a rule absolute).
