An estray is a domestic animal which has strayed away from its owner's custody. When a freeholder takes up any estray domestic animal he is required to file with the court of ordinary an appraisement and description of the animal, and an affidavit that his statements are correct. Homestead laws provided for the exemption of a certain amount of property, both realty and personalty, and of certain tools from levy and sale for debt. The exemptions were obtained in the court of ordinary. The Inferior Court was a common law court established in each county by the Georgia Constitution of 1789 which handled petty civil and criminal cases. These books are the County Treasurer's records certifying to the Inferior Court that fees were paid into the county treasury for such things as: 1) licenses for the sale of spirituous liquors; 2) fines for failure to perform repair work on roads; 3) taxes, and 4) retail licenses.
