Veterans Service

 Organization

Historical Note

In 1931, the Georgia legislature abolished three offices concerned with veterans' affairs and combined their duties into the newly-formed Veterans Service Office. These three organizations were the Office of Commissioner of Pensions, the Georgia Soldier Roster Commission, and the Service Bureau. These offices were founded in 1896, 1903, and 1923 respectively.

In 1945, Georgia lawmakers remade the Veterans Service Office into the Department of Veterans Service, anticipating the end of World War II. Other than the director's title being changed to commissioner in 1983 and authorizing the board to establish and maintain a Georgia War Veterans Cemetery in 1988, very few changes have been made to the department since 1945.
