This volume contains the proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Town of Milledgeville including the founding and surveying of the town and sales of lots.

Recorded in these volumes are grants issued for lots in the Town of Brunswick, Butts Reserve, Macon Reserve, and Coweta Falls or Columbus Reserve.

Each grant records the name of the grantee; the location of the lot; the county and district in which the grantee was residing at the time of participating in the lottery; and the date of the grant.

This series contains the official recorded copy of plats drawn pursuant to warrants of survey issued by the Governor for the Colonial and Headright counties. Each plat of survey contains the name of the person for whom the survey was made, the date of the warrant authorizing the survey, the date of the survey, the scale used in the survey, and the name of the surveyor. Also included is the county in which the land was surveyed and the acreage, or amount of land surveyed.

Field note books were compiled by district, reserve, and sectional surveyors in conjunction with the District Plats of Survey prior to the distribution of land by lottery, 1805-1833. Field notes record distances and points in which the districts and land lots were demarcated and numbered. References to land features, roads, and watercourses can also be found within the field note books.

Minutes include engineer's reports and document financial difficulties of a company whose stockholders included prominent Georgia politicians and businessmen.

Letters, valentine compositions, and business papers. Included is an 1847 receipt from James M. Quimby of New York for a two-seated Rockaway purchased by Moses Sinquefield. The early business letters are addressed to Sinquefield, but the later papers are all to Hines, some from Meriwether County to Coweta County, Georgia.

1857 - 1889, Estate Records, School Records and Court Records

The majority of papers are original Jones County Superior Court records collected by Cuyler, most connected with the sheriff's duties, including probate. A few papers contain lists of enslaved people or concern poor schools. There are also photographs taken in Atlanta of the 1891 Piedmont Exposition and other sites and of unidentified African-Americans.

The collection contains correspondence about Greene County, Georgia history and genealogy; original and typescript newspapers and clippings relating to the county; statistical information compiled by Arthur Raper; records relating to county officials; subject files about people, places, and subjects; printed materials; family genealogical folders; and a folder of photographs.

The collection contains Jones' diaries from 1917-1919 while he served with American Expeditionary Forces in Europe, Battery B, 320th Regt. Field Arty., and an expanded narrative draft he wrote from these notes. Also included are a "Gas" notebook, illustrated, concerning the use and effects of gas and pictures of A.E.F. insignias; a roster of Battery B; and a scrapbook of war and personal memorabilia.

Over a dozen deeds and eleven slave bills of sale (1828 - 1852) relating to Bryan. The collection also includes letters of recommendation for Ambrose M. Harris, Chatham County injunctions about the White Bluff Congregational Church, a John Purcel estate indenture, and other legal documents.

This collection includes correspondence between King and A. L. King and Thomas E. Blackshear, much of it concerning the Brunswick & Florida Railroad. Thomas's letters were written from "Monticello" and "Waverley" in Georgia. There is also a single 1858 letter from John William Henry Mitchell in Milledgeville, Georgia to his wife, Julia A. Johnson, in Thomasville, Thomas County, Georgia.

Primarily Civil War letters of Thomas C. Omary or O'Mary to his wife, Elizabeth, in Bowdon, Georgia, while he was serving in the 56th Regiment Georgia Volunteers, Company C in Vicksburg, Mississippi, in Tennessee, and in north Georgia. In May 1864, he was in a Kentucky prison. Also included are the letters of Elizabeth's Arnold family in Carroll County, Georgia, and of the Langfords in Warren County, North Carolina.

Letters written to his wife after Jefferson enlisted in Company E of the 36th Regiment in the fall of 1862. He was elected first lieutenant of his company and died at Vicksburg in June 1863.

The literate style and request for books in this single letter to sister "Matty" reflects Green's education.

Records included in the collection are estate papers and a small notebook largely concerning the guardianship of minors and the hiring of slaves. The papers name Forth's minor brothers-in-law, Benjamin Franklin Greene and others.

Includes personal business records, papers documenting Abercrombie's gardening hobby, and the records of the Atlanta Men's Gardening Club of which he was the first president. Information covers Georgia horticulture and various development projects such as the Stone Mountain Memorial Park in DeKalb County, Georgia.

This collection includes letters and newspaper clippings removed from a scrapbook kept by Whitaker. Some pertain to legal business; many are notes from female cousins and friends, including his future wife, many from Alabama. One 1876 note is from Alexander H. Stephens at Liberty Hall.

This collection includes a flowery and formal letter from Owen, who was serving in Co. E of the 6th Regt. GA Vols., the "Crawford Greys," to Sallie R. Merritt in Griffin, Georgia. Apparently they had either gone to school together or she was his teacher.

Correspondence between Swint and various companies throughout the United States who had hired him as a collection agent in the Washington County, Georgia, area.

Two sheets from an account book, containing: a labor agreement between Jones and freed persons, Luke, Lavinia, Andrew, Ellie, Loyd, Jim, and Sarah for August 1865 through Jan. 1, 1866; and records of the sharecroppers' work, expenses, and supplies.

First sheet of a letter to Fannie Tift Nelson, his wife. Dr. Thomas M. Nelson was probably serving as surgeon in the 4th Regiment Georgia Volunteers at the time of this letter.

Record of cash due and cash received for unspecified items.

Record of general merchandise sold by this LaFayette, Walker County, Georgia, store; Thomas Stiff was possibly the proprietor. The volume cites date, name of customer, goods sold, and cost.

Undated typescript of an 1818 diary kept by Thomas Stocks of Greene County, Georgia, in which he described the survey of the Georgia - Tennessee line near Nickajack Creek with James L. Gaines and Joseph Cobb of Tennessee. Includes a brief account of his lodgings and travel from his home to Murray County, Georgia.

Letters (mostly October 1863 - July 1864) from Grimes to his parents while he was with Nelson's Rangers under General Stephen D. Lee in Mississippi. The last letter from his unit is dated July 1 and speaks of his imminent furlough, so he probably missed major fighting later that month.

This collection includes a typescript of an oral interview with Tom "Pee Wee" Butts, done sometime after 1969 and before 1973.

Loose Wilkes County, Georgia, official records, including: apperenticeship indentures; slave bills of sale; mortgages, title bonds, etc.; poor school records; mixed court records; records of court cases, arranged by name of plaintiff with cross index to defendant; county officers bonds and other records of county matters; deeds, arranged by name of grantor with cross index to grantees; and estate records.

This manual was written to provide managerial and supervisory personnel with guidelines to the general administrative policies and procedures of the Department of Transportation. It is also used in the orientation of new employees. The manual will be compiled and released as each chapter is completed.
