This series consists of unbound fragments of correspondence of the U.S. Army occupation forces in Georgia after the Civil War. The documents relate principally to reports of federally regulated elections held in several Georgia towns during Reconstruction and financial reports as of November 30, 1865, on the Western and Atlantic's indebtedness and purchases from the United States government.

This series consists of unbound voided certificates of indebtedness (bonds) issued by the Board of Commissioners of the Western and Atlantic Railroad and the Governor. These bonds, Numbers 56, 57 and 58, were authorized by Georgia Laws 1837, pp. 210-212. The General Assembly authorized the issuance of $2,000,000 in bonds. These were not marketable but were finally used in obtaining a loan payable in London which at the time was the financial center of the world.

This series consists of bound receipt stubs for cotton shipments made by the Western and Atlantic. The stubs show the: date, consignor, consignee, and any identifying marks on the bales. They do not indicate the origin or shipment point of the cotton. All the consignments were for Charleston, S.C. agents.

This series consists of an unbound record of "foreign cars" (freight cars from other railroads) sent south through Chattanooga for use on the W&A. The records contain information on: date of departure, identification number of the car (regular and miscellaneous), type of freight car, receiving railroad, ultimate destination, when returned, and remarks. Also included is an unbound summary "State of Private Cars over the Western and Atlantic Railroad for November, 1870".

This series consists of unbound freight car lists documenting the transfer of freight cars from the Macon and Western Railroad to the Western & Atlantic at Atlanta. Information includes: date of transfer, owner and character of car, car number, from/to destination, expenses, freight charges, and amount unpaid. The form was probably also used for other transfers from other roads at other connecting depots. Each list records a day's transfers.

This series consists of unbound claims made against the Western & Atlantic by other carriers or shippers for losses, damages or overcharges. A typical claim shows the: shipper, carrier, origin, destination, date, description of freight, and money claimed. Included are vouchers, copies of way-bills and claim statements varying with each railroad. These were submitted to the General Freight Agent for approval for payment by the General Bookkeeper.

This series consists of brief unbound forms recording the sale of commuter, excursion and 1,000 mile tickets for travel up and down the Western & Atlantic. Information on the forms includes: (1) name of station where the tickets were sold, (2) date, (3) particular distance of miles traveled and the corresponding sequential ticket number, (4) type of ticket sold, (5) where from, (6) where to, (7) to whom sold, and (8) amount.

This series consists of semi-bound reports of tickets sold by conductors to "way" passengers traveling along the W & A or "through" passengers traveling to other lines. The reports list the: (1) number of passengers, (2) where from, (3) where to, (4) amount, and (5) total (which was usually audited). The reports usually cover two consecutive days at a time and are clipped together on a one to two week basis.
